Two procedures for implanting spinal cord neurostimulators were performed at the Giglio Foundation in Cefalù on patients with bilateral low back pain. “In both patients, who were suffering from severe pain,” explains the anaesthetist and pain therapist at the Giglio Foundation, Giuliano Lo Bianco, “we implanted a spinal cord neurostimulator consisting of electrodes and a ‘pacemaker’ pulse generator that creates an electromagnetic field around the spinal cord, which can modulate the conduction of chronic pain. The electrodes are positioned at the level of the epidural space,’ continues Lo Bianco, ‘through a percutaneous incision under local anaesthesia, then connected to the pulse generator, which is placed inside a subcutaneous pocket in the supragluteal region. ” The intensity of the impulses is managed through a remote control provided to the patient, who can modify it according to the activities to be performed.
“It is certainly an evolution of pain therapy,” notes Lo Bianco, “that allows the patient to reduce pain, reactivate mobility, and resume a satisfactory quality of life. “The Giglio Foundation,” emphasises president Giovanni Albano, “has for some years now activated a pain medicine outpatient clinic that takes care of the whole person by identifying the causes and intervening, where possible, in resolving them”.
