Useful in patients with joint pain due to arthrosis or rheumatism who do not respond to conservative therapies (medicines and/or physiotherapy), and where it is necessary to reduce inflammation or nourish cartilage and synovium. Infiltration, carried out under ultrasound guidance for precise visualisation of the target, consists of injecting drugs (with anti-inflammatory and/or lubricating activity) into the joints (hip, knee, shoulder, lumbar and cervical facet joints, small joints of the hand and foot) in order to reduce pain symptoms.
Intra-Articular Infiltration
Hyaluronic Acid
Hyaluronic acid is a substance naturally produced by the human body that can be found in the connective tissue of the skin, cartilage or tendons in joints. Synovial fluid in joint cavities provides viscosity and prevents bones from coming into contact with each other during movement. Hyaluronic acid contributes to lubrication mechanisms under load and protects the tissue from penetration by inflammatory cells or lytic enzymes. When, due to ageing or specific pathologies, hyaluronic acid does not regenerate after being metabolised and is lacking, local injections can be used. In joints suffering from severe arthrosis, the purpose of intra-articular injection of hyaluronic acid, called viscosupplementation, is to restore the viscoelastic properties of synovial fluid. Hyaluronic acid stimulates anabolic activity with production of new cartilage and its antiphlogistic and analgesic action is even more effective in the early stages of the disease. The use of intra-articular therapy with hyaluronic acid is indicated in patients who have not responded to physiotherapy and/or pharmacological treatments.
CASE STUDY OF JOINT INFILTRATIONS
Maria, 68, suffers from pain in her left knee, which has worsened over time to the extent that she is no longer able to walk up steps at home. Ms Maria was treated with anti-inflammatory drugs, analgesics and tecar therapy, but after a short time the pain recurred. Ms Maria was therefore referred to the office of Dr Lo Bianco, who, after a careful assessment of the arthritic state through a X-ray exam of her knee, a thorough specialist examination and an ultrasound examination, decided to subject her to a course of ultrasound-guided intra-articular infiltrations with hyaluronic acid. Hyaluronic acid stimulates anabolic activity with production of new cartilage with antiphlogistic and analgesic action.
“Thanks to doctor Lo Bianco I can walk again without pain and climb the stairs at home. The infiltrations were not painful at all, doctor Lo Bianco was very kind and helpful, I felt at ease immediately, I recommend him to everyone.” Maria
